Introduction Skellefteå City Of Gold Skellefteå City Of Gold

Skellefteå is an old community originally based on small-scale agriculture and trade between the people living in the vast forests between the coast, the Scandinavian mountain range and the southern parts of Sweden. The town is located only one hour by air from Stockholm.
The discovery of the rich Boliden ore in 1924 induced a drastic change in the structure of the society. In Skellefteå, mining and metal production and related support industries became the core of the economy. Today the region is, more than ever, a mineral rich province and the development continues.
Skellefteå is located in the far North, on the same latitude as Northern Alaska. This means that you get the midnight sun in the summer, but with a mild climate thanks to the Gulf Stream. Although the winters are cold, the people living in the region are warm and welcoming. The proximity to many active and reclaimed mines, as well as a large variety of cultural attractions in Lapland and along the Gulf of Bothnia, provide several opportunities for field excursions satisfying both social and scientific interests.

Tourism & Leisure

Ideal destination to enjoy the outdoors, Skellefteå has so much to offer with unusually good natural conditions: clean air, untouched nature, unexploited rivers, up to 1200 lakes, rocky coasts and sandy beaches at the seaside.
Here the word wildlife gets its true meaning. The fishing and the hunting in Northern Sweden are probably among the best in the country as well as hiking and other activities.

Seaside resort in the summer, ski resort in the winter and entertainment centre all year round: as a geographic starting point it is perfect. It offers proximity to real winters and coastal summers with lots of sunshine.
Nature, ranging from northern lights to midnight sun, is always near, as is vibrant city life in the centre of Skellefteå which offers a surprisingly big choice of shopping, accommodation, restaurants, entertainment and culture.
Much of what is really interesting about Skellefteå lies in these very contrasts: the chance to experience so many unusual things from one and the same starting point.
